Winter Zooplankton in a Small Arctic Lake: Abundance and Vertical Distribution

چکیده
Zooplankton assemblages are of great importance in aquatic food webs because they link lower (microplankton) and higher trophic levels (top predators). Small water bodies the Arctic regions Russia less studied winter severe ice conditions. For this reason, we analyzed zooplankton community Lake Kulonga (western coast Kola Bay, Barents Sea). A total 9 taxa were found samples. The abundance varied from 200 to 1320 ind. m?3, averaging 705 m?3. biomass was 1.8–72.8 mg wet mass m?3 with an average 30 These parameters than other Russian sub-arctic lakes summer. Old copepodites Cyclops spp. dominated at deep-water stations terms consisting 24–33%. copepod Macrocyclops albidus prevailed comprising 30–33% while scutifer had highest shallow stations. Vertical distribution demonstrated different patterns neighboring stations, probably as a result differences density fish predators.

Moonlight Drives Ocean-Scale Mass Vertical Migration of Zooplankton during the Arctic Winter
In extreme high-latitude marine environments that are without solar illumination in winter, light-mediated patterns of biological migration have historically been considered non-existent [1]. However, diel vertical migration (DVM) of zooplankton has been shown to occur even during the darkest part of the polar night, when illumination levels are exceptionally low [2, 3]. This paradox is, as yet...
متن کاملStudy on composition and abundance of zooplankton assemblages in Eğirdir Lake (Isparta, Turkey)
To determine the composition and abundance of zooplankton assemblages in Eğirdir Lake-Turkey, monthly surveys were conducted from January to December 2010 at four stations. A total of 65 major zooplankton species were identified. Rotifera was the most abundant taxon dominated mainly by the species Polyarthra dolichoptera and Keratella cochlearis. Rotifers were recorded at the maximum abundance ...

متن کاملVertical distribution and diel patterns of zooplankton abundance and biomass at Conch Reef, Florida Keys (USA)
Zooplankton play an important role in the trophic dynamics of coral reef ecosystems. Detailed vertical and temporal distribution and biomass of zooplankton were evaluated at four heights off the bottom and at six times throughout the diel cycle over a coral reef in the Florida Keys (USA). Zooplankton abundance averaged 4396 +/- 1949 SD individuals m(-3), but temporal and spatial distributions v...
متن کاملVertical distribution of microbial communities in a perennially stratified Arctic lake with saline, anoxic bottom waters
Meromictic lakes are useful biogeochemical models because of their stratified chemical gradients and separation of redox reactions down the water column. Perennially ice-covered meromictic lakes are particularly stable, with long term constancy in their density profiles. Here we sampled Lake A, a deep meromictic lake at latitude 83°N in High Arctic Canada. Sampling was before (May) and after (A...
